Taiwan Government Offers Assistance to Photovoltaic Industry

Taiwan?ˉs Ministry of Economic Affairs(MOEA) will provide assistance to support the domestic production of low-iron glass,EVA(ethyl-vinyl acetate),silver/aluminum paste, solder and other raw materials that are needed in the photovoltaic (pv)industry but not currently produced Taiwan.

The PV industry in Taiwan has grown sharply from NT$21.2 billion in 2006 to a forecast figure of NT$90 billion in 2008.

Among the companies slated to receive assistance are suppliers of polysilicon needed by downstream solar panel producers, including Sun Materials Technology, Taiwan Polysilicon, Muto Silicon and Top Green Energy Technologies. These companies are anticipated to invest a total of more than NT$30 billion.

Incentives

In view of the importance of PV-use polysillicon, theMOEA will offer various incentives to companies in this sector, including tax incentives providedfor important and strategic sector.

If local capacity expands smoothly,it is anticipated that PV-use polysilicon output will reach 10000to 20000 metric tons in 2010, compared to a total global output estimated at 140000 metric tons at that time.

Under a program to support development of new leading products, the MOEA will also provided assistance to domestic producers of low-iron glass,EVA,silver/aluminu paste, solder and other PV-use materials ,such us Formosa Plastics,Taiwan Glass, Gigastorage and shenmao.Total invesment by these companies in the PV sector is anticipated to reach NT$3.6 billion.Gigastorage has already started supplying silver/aluminum paste, and the other companies are anticioated to bring related products to market in 2009.

The output from the planned capacity expansions is estimated to reach NT$40 billion and meet the full demand of downstream PV producers in Taiwan through to 2015.
